One DEI SAMPLE TOPIC: Curriculum Development and Framework for Understanding Culturally Responsive Teaching
Session 1: Fundamentals of Culturally Responsive Teaching
TIME: 4.5-5 Hours
This session introduces the concept of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) that was defined by eminent scholar Gloria Ladson Billings as teaching that “empowers students to maintain cultural integrity, while succeeding academically”. CRT as a critical pedagogy is fundamental to the success of all students in our increasingly diverse society. In this workshop, teachers will understand what CRT entails and why is it important as part of their educator skills-set. As part of our exploration, teachers will explore the history of our educational system and the structures in place that have excluded various groups from reaching their full potential in their academic careers and beyond. Through this process, teachers will become more aware of their place and role as educators today to ensure equitable and inclusive education for all students.
